Mandatory Training for work in Northern Ireland

If your bookings involve transfusion activity, you must complete training in line with the Right Patient Right Blood circular.

If you have not been trained / assessed or need reassessment, you must complete/provide the following:

Blood Transfusion e-learning
The 2 required modules are:
1. Safe Transfusion Practice
2. Blood Components and Indication For Use

Once you have completed the 2 e-learning modules please download a PDF certificate and email to your Compliance Officer.

If you require assistance with your e-learning account please contact your compliance officer.

Competency assessment certificates (Minimum competency 1 & 4)

These can be arranged via the HSCNI Trusts in Northern Ireland (HSCNI Haemovigilance contact details). There is a fee for this for locums - Belfast Trust assessment, for example, is £45.

We also offer competency assessment to its locums at our Belfast office (The fee for this is £27 – your Compliance officer will provide further details if needed).

Additional modules/assessments may be required, depending on Trust requirements.

If you work in a specialty not involved in these procedures, you can sign a Desist Notice confirming that you will not take part in pre-transfusion sampling, collection or administration of blood, except in an emergency situation.


Hyponatraemia / Anti-coagulants
(3 separate modules required from BMJ):

1. BMJ Reducing the risk of hyponatraemia when administering I.V. fluids to children module 
2. Successful completion of the BMJ Learning Module on Hyponatraemia
3. Successful completion of the BMJ Safe Use of Anticoagulants module
